Segundo o dicionário, "drama" descreve uma situação da vida real que é exageradamente emocional, cheia de conflito, confusão ou crise, muitas vezes desnecessária. A arte de se fazer um filme dramático é complicada e complexa por gerar incongruências, estas formadas por situações que fluem a narrativa através dos conflitos.

Hong Sang-soo move seus filmes através do romance, no entanto, não no sentido de amor, mas no sentido literário da palavra: uma novela. Portanto, quando falamos de drama e Sang-soo, falamos de tudo o que envolve o sentimentalismo humano, mas um deles se destaca: a solidão. Ser sozinho e estar sozinho são coisas distintas. "Ser sozinho" refere-se muito mais a um estilo de vida que, fruto de uma independência precoce, transforma o ato de estar acompanhado em mais uma das tarefas do dia a dia. Já "estar sozinho" é sobre a opção, sobre poder estar acompanhado e ainda assim optar por ter um tempo a sós.

E por que inicio nossa crítica assim? Pois In Front Of Your Face (2021) é sobre recusar a própria solidão e revisitar memórias em busca de um último propósito: a famigerada nostalgia. Sendo um filme sobre solidão, temos aqui a figura de referência: uma mulher solitária que está tentando ao máximo recuperar um tempo que não volta mais. As coisas mudaram, assim como ela. Ela mudou no momento em que buscou melhores condições de vida, uma possível ganância. Nos Estados Unidos, ela provavelmente viu valor naquele local e viveu uma vida que nunca seria possível em seu país de origem, ainda que com dificuldades. No entanto, os EUA não eram sua verdadeira casa.

Ainda que tudo o que o filme aborda seja solidão, a opção pelos "loucos" roteiros do diretor transforma qualquer companhia em algo significativo, presentes e sorrisos. A alegria anda lado a lado com o ser solitário, pois, nesses momentos, eles entendem o valor de se estar com alguém. O lado solitário de uma pessoa também é o mais amável e dócil, pois nele temos o questionamento do futuro segundo a visão de uma solitude que, muitas vezes, vem de criação. É o questionamento de entender se o mundo está alinhado com suas ideias, e quando digo ideias, falo de medo.

E por que "medo"? O medo é um sentimento de defesa de todo ser vivo. Tendo ele como base, tal sentimento se torna um apego, afinal, o ser que nunca conheceu a segurança acha que viver com medo é o normal. No filme de Hong Sang-soo, o medo se apresenta nos momentos de silêncio, nos quais o momento contemplativo alcança o metalinguístico através das expressões faciais. Aqueles longos segundos de desconforto transmitem o medo em seu mais puro estado. Sendo assim, o medo e a solidão se encontram porque se completam naquele ser fragilizado.

Por fim, In Front of Your Face se torna um dos filmes mais trágicos de Hong Sang-soo, sendo uma carta de despedidas, assim como uma visita à família, à sua antiga casa e à cidade natal. Em algum momento da vida, todos teremos nossa solidão, solitude e sentimento de medo e incertezas. No entanto, o modo como lidamos com esses frágeis momentos é reflexo de uma sociedade que falhou no todo. Mas àqueles que conseguem ver beleza em meio ao caos, estes serão exemplos a serem seguidos para moldar uma futura sociedade mais segura, cuidadosa e empática. According to the dictionary, "drama" describes a real-life situation that is overly emotional, full of conflict, confusion, or crisis, often unnecessarily so. The art of making a dramatic film is complicated and complex because it generates incongruities, which are formed by situations that drive the narrative through conflicts.

Hong Sang-soo propels his films through romance, not in the sense of love, but in the literary sense of the word: a novel. Therefore, when we talk about drama and Sang-soo, we are talking about everything that involves human sentimentality, but one element stands out: loneliness. Being alone and feeling alone are distinct things. "Being alone" refers much more to a lifestyle where, as a result of early independence, the act of being with others becomes just another daily task. Meanwhile, "feeling alone" is about choice, about being able to be with others and yet choosing to have some time by oneself.

And why do I begin our critique this way? Because In Front of Your Face (2021) is about refusing one's loneliness and revisiting memories in search of a final purpose: the infamous nostalgia. As a film about solitude, we have here a central figure: a lonely woman who is trying her hardest to reclaim a time that will not return. Things have changed, just as she has. She changed the moment she sought better living conditions, a possible greed. In the United States, she probably saw value in that place and lived a life that would never have been possible in her home country, albeit with difficulties. However, the U.S. was not her true home.

Although the film deals primarily with solitude, the director's "crazy" scripts transform any companionship into something meaningful—gifts and smiles. Joy walks hand in hand with the lonely individual, for in these moments, they understand the value of being with someone. The lonely side of a person is also the most loving, the most docile, because within it lies the questioning of the future from the perspective of a solitude that often stems from upbringing. It is the questioning of whether the world aligns with one's ideas, and by ideas, I mean fear.

And why "fear"? Fear is a defense sentiment in every living being. With it as a foundation, this feeling becomes an attachment; after all, a being who has never known security thinks that living in fear is normal. In Hong Sang-soo's film, fear presents itself in moments of silence, where the contemplative moment becomes meta-linguistic through facial expressions. Those long, uncomfortable seconds transmit fear in its purest state. Thus, fear and loneliness meet because they complete each other in that fragile being.

Finally, In Front of Your Face becomes one of Hong Sang-soo's most tragic films, serving as a farewell letter, as well as a visit to family, one's old home, and hometown. At some point in life, we will all experience our loneliness, solitude, and feelings of fear and uncertainty. However, the way we deal with these fragile moments is a reflection of a society that has largely failed. But for those who can see beauty amidst the chaos, they will be the examples to follow in shaping a future society that is safer, more caring, and empathetic.
